The World Benchmarking Alliance invites you to participate in our side event that will be taking place during London Climate Action Week 2023 and will be discussing the theme of accelerating the global clean economy. The session will focus on the energy sector and examine how National Oil Companies (NOCs) can develop more credible transition plans and shift their financial flows to align with a 1.5 C scenario which will also be a key topic of focus at the UAE COP28 presidency.
While some progress is noticeable and recent initiatives have been launched such as the Global Decarbonization Alliance, much remains to be actioned. Many gaps remain to ensure the oil and gas industry makes significant climate progress ahead of COP28. This side-event will also be an opportunity to present upcoming research with other organisations. We will invite experts in the field and assess what are the risks for companies that do not transition fast enough and what are the opportunities for those that do. In particular the event will include the following speakers and guiding questions:
What is the level of transition plan readiness from NOCs? What are the implications and shared learnings across companies (Joachim Roth, Climate Policy Lead, World Benchmarking Alliance)
What external drivers can act as levers for change for NOCs? How can these levers translate into NOCs redirecting their financial flows to align with 1.5C? (Angela Picciariello, Senior Researcher, IISD & Paasha Madhavi, Associate Professor, UC Santa Barbara)
